What does the drowning-prevention research mean?
The NIH summary of a case-control study describes a protective association between lessons and drowning risk in young children, but says the exact protective effect could not be calculated. It does not establish a guaranteed outcome for a particular child or school. Keep supervision and other protections in place.
How can I avoid expecting too much?
Choose one or two goals you can discuss with your child and instructor. A child enjoying a lesson is different from independently demonstrating a skill; both can be worth recording.
